At great speed, 2013 is hurtling along already. Dramatic, isn’t it?
I have a few projects starting to take shape, and it’s a pretty exciting time. I can see some of my work behind the scenes start to bring forward opportunities. That’s always comforting – at times I can get such tunnel vision for those behind the scenes tasks and wonder if I’m just obsessing for no solid outcomes.
In 2013, I will be doing an Honours year at a different and highly respected art school in Melbourne. So excited to get back to study and pulling apart my practice. I have come a long way from when I first found out in November. I have progressed through feelings of uncertainty, nerves – now I’m pumped, and ready to go. Roll on end-of-Feb.
I will be showing work as part of the Art in Public Places event, put on by Hobson’s Bay City Council for the month of April. These will be works on wooden board, but I am also negotiating outdoor spaces to potentially paint in installation(s). A super wonderful opportunity and outdoors. Lots of challenges such as weather proofing and permanence or lack thereof.
In May, I’m very happy to be joining Polly Hollyoak in creating a collaborative work for an exhibition at Seventh Gallery in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. We have worked alongside each other for three years now, but never on the same installation – should be fun. Suffice it to say, there will be colour!
During the second half of the year, I will be taking part in Homemade 2013, a Melbourne based festival showing the work of emerging artists, where I will be exhibiting with dancers, an illustrator and another visual artist. This past weekend I was involved in an intensive series of workshops as part of the preparations for the festival. Great to meet the organisers and other artists who are taking part. I didn’t have much exposure to the performing arts during university, but it is so interesting to hear them speak about their work and their creative process. There are certainly many differences, but a surprising amount of similarities in the way we work.
We were also fortunate to have guest artists Cara-Ann Simpson (sound/installation) and Leanne Cole (photographer) speak about their own practices. Always love getting into the minds of other artists. Some great info about applying for grants, marketing and creative process.
This has been a terribly upbeat post, hasn’t it. I am very excited about all that lies ahead. But it’s going to be a very full few months. I have a great deal of work to do and I have that weird feeling in the pit of my stomach – sure that I will make work for each opportunity, but at this end, I don’t know what form the works will take yet.
Still, there is plenty for me to share with you as I sort my way toward these projects. Here comes the art…
