Sheen Slip

Exhibition / Installation

Sheen Slip was a solo exhibition at Alternating Current Art Space during September 2016.

Naomi Nicholls likes to paint where painting is not meant to go. Her installations are paintings that have left the canvas and escaped the frame. They prefer to stretch out across the floor, up the wall, across the ceiling.

These vast collages of paint and coloured vinyl are painted with brush strokes that require movement of the whole body, extension of limbs and reach. The forms and route of the brush are based on the impulsive movements of the body. The completed artwork is evidence of this very physical process.

Nicholls has recently added painting on panels back into her practice. Forms and angles are pushed together in spite of the edge of the rectangle, not in response to it. The boundaries are ignored just like in her installations.
